Yeovil Town Centre improvement works commence at The Triangle

Released On 24th Jun 2022

The exciting plans for The Triangle in Yeovil Town Centre have begun this week (20 June) as part of the South Somerset District Council Yeovil Refresh project.

Over the upcoming weeks, visitors to The Triangle will find Wessex Water excavating the site. This is to divert the water main in this area and allow for the next stage of works to take place.

The current street furniture will be removed to enable this work to occur. SSDC are committed to promoting a sustainable environment, economy and community and will re-use this street furniture, including benches, in other areas of the district. Elements and materials that can’t be re-used will be recycled.

Once Wessex Water have completed the excavation, there will be further works by all utilities to divert the gas mains, sewers, electricity supplies and telephone lines.  The main contractors South West Highways (SWH), who have recently completed the improvement works to Wine Street, will then begin the main areas of work to The Triangle. This is planned to include:

  • Raised stage area with amphitheatre seating - an area for individuals to socialise, take a break from shopping and watch/take part in a range of entertainment.
  • Big screen – as requested by the public as part of the original consultation, a large screen is set to be installed to display promotions and key events.
  • Focal water feature
  • Natural stone paving and ornamental planting
  • Planting of new trees
  • Installation of an art feature co-created with community groups during the Covid-19 lockdowns

Councillor Peter Gubbins, executive member for Yeovil Refresh, said, “It is fantastic to see the works to The Triangle commencing. This major area of the Yeovil Refresh project will greatly benefit visitors, residents and business owners of the town centre - offering an area to socialise, entertain and promote businesses. The works will also vastly improve the appearance of this central town location, attracting more visitors to the area and improving individuals’ shopping experiences.”

SWH added; “SWH are delighted to announce that our works at the Triangle in Yeovil, under the Yeovil Refresh Scheme, have now begun. We have worked closely with SSDC and local businesses to optimise the design ensuring that not only the local businesses and residents benefit for its legacy but also the wider community. It will be a fantastic space for all to enjoy all year round.”

What about Westminster Street?

After preparations of the site and reviews of the ground levels, contracts to restart the works to Westminster Street were signed last week. South West Highways (SWH) are the chosen contractors to deliver this important work over the upcoming weeks.

We understand that the delay to this area of the project has caused inconvenience and frustration. We would like to thank local businesses, residents and visitors for their patience during this time and emphasise that completing this section of works as quickly and efficiently as possible is a top priority.
